The Development of M.E.C.C.A. College & Career Academies:

A Vision for Transformative Education

The story of M.E.C.C.A. (Mentoring by Example Foundation College & Career Academies) began in 2014, born from a grassroots movement by the Mentoring by Example Foundation. Known for its work with at-risk youth, the foundation identified a gap in educational offerings. To extend its impact, M.E.C.C.A. envisioned tuition-free public schools that integrate mentorship, real-world skills, and career readiness directly into academic curricula.

Creating a Network of Schools
From 2015 to 2016, M.E.C.C.A. formed a Corporate Development Group, consisting of professionals committed to founding an education services enterprise. They designed a core set of services including tuition-free public charter schools, innovative curriculum development, and mentorship programs. These schools emphasize real-world skills, career and college readiness, and leadership training, with a focus on serving at-risk and high-needs students.

Pursuing the M.E.C.C.A. Business Learning Institute
By 2017, M.E.C.C.A. set out to develop the M.E.C.C.A. Business Learning Institute (MBLI), a groundbreaking charter school focused on blending business education with traditional academics. The curriculum is designed to foster entrepreneurship, leadership, and critical thinking, preparing students for higher education and future careers.

Securing Major Grants and Charters (2023)
M.E.C.C.A. achieved major milestones in 2023, receiving a $900,000 startup grant from the Maryland State Department of Education and a $1.5 million grant from the U.S. Department of Education. These funds support MBLI in both Maryland and West Virginia. Despite facing initial setbacks in Maryland, M.E.C.C.A. secured approval from the Maryland State Board of Education, affirming its mission.

Launching the First Schools (2025)
In 2025, M.E.C.C.A. plans to open its first two schools in Maryland and West Virginia. These institutions will offer inclusive education, prioritizing students from diverse backgrounds, including those who are homeless or at-risk. M.E.C.C.A.’s mission is to create progressive educational opportunities that address the evolving needs of students and the professional sector, preparing the next generation of leaders and innovators.

The transformation of M.E.C.C.A. from a grassroots movement into an educational institution underscores the power of vision, dedication, and community involvement in reshaping the future of education.
